Ayurveda
holds that the human body is an ever changing, dynamic collection of energy
and intelligence in the larger field of energy and intelligence that is the
universe. As the body is alive and pulsating with energy, there can be
innumerable ‘energy points’ within it and upon the surface - these vital
energy points are called
marma.
These
points are ‘vital’ because they are infused with life force, prana, and
imbued with consciousness.
Consciousness
express itself in lively, concentrated form at these points.
Thus, marma therapy serves as a bridge or doorway between
body-mind-consciousness.
Marma points are also defined
as the junction where flesh, veins, arteries, tendons, bones and joints
meet. These points are connected like a rosary by a subtle channel called
nadi. Marmas are vitalised by the pranic energy carried to them via these
subtle channels.
When the therapist touches the
marma by applying, according to the situation, either gentle or deep
pressure, that touch is a complex biochemical and neuroelectrical impulse.
The energy of that touch passes through the gateway of the marma to the
respective tissue, channel and their organs, promoting energy balance.
Stimulating marmas can release
endorphin and neurotransmitters in the brain that results in pain modulation
and mood enhancement, restoring balance to the autonomic nervous system,
harmonising sympathetic and parasympathetic functions. Due to the
transmission of neural impulses along nerve pathways to the brain, and from
the brain to the organ or area of the body being treated, stimulating marmas
can have a therapeutic effect locally as well as distally from the point.
A session of marma therapy consists in
applying steady pressure to specific marma points for approximately one to
two minutes.
An information intake prior to
the treatment is necessary to gain knowledge of the individual’s
constitution and current condition, determining which marma points are
selected, the degree of pressure, and the medicated oils best suited. Marma
therapy is repeated periodically until symptoms resolved.
The benefits of marma therapy
include:
-
Therapeutic
influences (Pacifies/stimulates doshas; maintains the tissue’s normal
function and treats disorders present; regulates channels disturbances;
restores/enlivens cellular communication, metabolism and immune function)
-
Mechanism of pain
relief
-
Stimulation of
digestive fire and detoxification of toxins
-
Calming the mind and
balancing emotions
-
Enhancing awareness
-
Preventative care and
rejuvenation.
